“Sicilian Red Wine”
Thursday, October 18th 6pm
We continue to explore indigenous grape varieties and wines from around the Mediterranean basin and it still is quite the fascinating and enlightening journey. For this tasting, we will be tasting four interesting, unique red wines from Sicily—each family owned and well worth trying to say the least. How often do opportunities like this come around?
2016 Portelli Frappato
Five generations of a family-- thirty six year old vines-- grown in mainly clay soils.
”The Portellis have mastered the maceration and extraction to get the most out of their grapes—their wines are loaded with charm and luscious fruit while possessing plenty of structure on the backend“
2013 Planeta Frappato “Vittoria”
A fascinating, unique Frappato, which this winery claims is because the vines grow in the red sands of Vittoria, in close proximity to the sea.

We will serve this red wine BLIND, just for the fun of it.
2014 Riofavara Eloro “Sciavè”
One of the finest red indigenous red wines I have run across from Sicily. The Padova family has been growing grapes in the area for over one hundred years, but only started bottling their own from 1993. Located in the southern tip, soils of limestone, clay and marl, forty three year old vines, organically farmed—1/3 new oak, this is a Nero d’Avola which has much mojo and soul with a masterly crafted frame and structure..
There you have it, four sensational wines.
